Jumpstart | One session at a time when you need it

What is Jumpstart?

Jumpstart sessions focus on what is important to you right now, providing support when you need it – one session at a time. You'll focus on what matters most to you right now. Jumpstart gives you flexibility of support when you need it.

In a Jumpstart session, you’re in control. You’ll talk with your clinician about the challenges you’re currently facing and work together to identify your priorities. From there, you’ll develop a personalised plan, including practical strategies and helpful resources you can use straight away.

Many young people find that one session is enough to get on track and move forward. However, you’re always welcome to book another Jumpstart session whenever you need support.

Is Jumpstart right for me?

Jumpstart is there for you whenever you need it, whether you’re using our other services or not. You can use Jumpstart as a once off; more regularly when something comes up; or in between appointments with our other services. If you do decide to access other support, Jumpstart sessions can be used to support you while you wait.

What else do I need to know?

  • Jumpstart is a free service for 12-25 years olds and you can bring a support person if you'd like
  • Your clinician will help you decide if you would like to book another Jumpstart session; think about other support that may be suitable for you; or if you feel that one session is enough for now
  • We want to help you as quickly as we can so you may not see the same clinician each time

Ok, so how do I book?

If you're new to headspace Frankston or headspace Rosebud, you can book by using our online referral form below, calling or emailing us, or dropping into the centre during our business hours. A friend, family member or other service can help book for you with your consent.

For existing headspace clients, call, email or drop in to book a Jumpstart session – you’ll be offered the next available appointment.

Jumpstart offers free one at a time support sessions available when you need them so you can tackle the issues that are important to you right now. Get help to set your goals, develop personalised plans, and explore practical strategies to achieve them with a qualified and experienced headspace clinician.

Jumpstart uses single session thinking (SST) so you can have the number of sessions that suit you, when you want. Just one session can help you get on track and move forward. You don't have to tell your whole backstory and you decide what you want to talk about if you want more sessions. Your clinician can help you decide if you want other services and get you linked in.

With Jumpstart you can get help quicker or use it while you're waiting for or in between other sessions of support. You'll be booked in with the next available clinician to reduce your wait time. This means that you might not see the same clinician next time.

Jumpstart uses single session thinking (SST). Research shows that one focussed support session can be enough to help you take a positive step forward. Single session thinking focuses on what feels most important to you right now. For some people, one session may be enough for now; for others, it can help identify what other types of support might be useful. This means Jumpstart is different to other types of counselling because you don't need to tell your whole backstory and you can have as many sessions as you need, when you need.

Yes. With Jumpstart, you’ll meet with one of our specially trained clinicians who has experience supporting young people. Jumpstart is a little different from traditional therapy or counselling because there is no set number of sessions. You may find that one session is enough for now, or you may choose to book more sessions to focus on different things. You are welcome to book a Jumpstart session whenever you feel you need support again. You may not see the same clinician each time; this is because we’re booking you in for the next available appointment to reduce your wait time.

Jumpstart can get you help quicker and it's there when you need. One session of Jumpstart focussed on the issue you want to talk about can get you on track and moving forward. You can use Jumpstart while for or in between other sessions of support. Your Jumpstart clinician can help you decide if you want another session of Jumpstart or if there's other types of support including counselling and specialist services you want to be linked in with.

You might complete some forms with your clinician at the beginning of the session. Together with your clinician you’ll decide on what you want to focus on for that session. Your clinician will ask you about what’s going on and together you might set goals, develop personalised plans and/or explore practical strategies to achieve them. You might also talk about other services that are available to you. Towards the end you can talk about booking in for another session of Jumpstart if you think you might need it.

Yes! You can use Jumpstart if you’re waiting for other services or if you’re in between appointments as a top up. You can also talk to your Jumpstart clinician about other support you can be linked in with.

To help you as quickly as possible, you will be offered the next available appointment. This means you may not see the same clinician each time.

Yes! Our clinicians can help link you in with other services including counselling, physical and sexual health, alcohol and other drugs, work and study, Centrelink, legal, and social supports.

We have a no wrong door policy. This means if our services aren’t right for you we’ll help find other free or low cost options. If you don't want to use Jumpstart it won't affect you using any of our other services.

Yes! We always encourage feedback about our programs, good or bad, because it helps us improve. You can send feedback directly through your closest centre or go to headspace.org.au/contact-us for other options including an anonymous online form.
