Community Engagement
who we are
Our team is made up of two Community Engagement Coordinators who work part-time (3 days a week) across headspace Upper Coomera and headspace Southport. We work within the Gold Coast region in partnership and collaboration with young people, parents, carers, schools, other health organisations and key stakeholders. We plan and lead projects, events and activities that build strong connections with our community and contribute to mental health literacy and improved service access and support for young people.
what we do
Our role is diverse, with a strong focus on supporting our community to understand how headspace can help and how to access our services. We also support young people, their caregivers and everyone around them to build tools, resources and literacy around mental health and wellbeing.
We lead and participate in fun, informative events and activities in schools, at council events, festivals, community days and for dates of recognition like Mental Health Week, RU OK Day, Pride Month and Harmony Week.
want to collaborate?
Moving beyond stalls and wellbeing expos, we want to help you dream big and deliver an experience that truly engages participants. Got an idea in mind? Let’s hear it. If not, we can help you brainstorm innovative ways we can lead or participate in activities and events.
"Learning about headspace and mental health through doing the art activities was way better than having someone talk at me in a school presentation." - student participant in headspace X Wesley Mission school holiday art program
We work closely with stakeholders to plan and deliver impactful projects and programs that respond to the unique needs of young people in our community. Some past projects include:
- Co-designing an LGBTIQAP+ social group embedded in a secondary school
- Facilitating a multicultural cooking group
- Leading the design and delivery of a School Refusal Program
We can roll into your school, uni or alternative education space to educate students about headspace and why they might come to us for support. Use the below links to pitch your awesome idea or send us a request to contribute or collaborate:
- Community Engagement Request Form for Schools/Unis/Tafes
- Community Engagement Request Form for Services/Community Groups
Please note that our Community Engagement team is not able to provide presentations or workshops on mental health or specific topics, to schools/unis/tafes. Click here for info on evidenced-based, clinician-led programs, and other offerings specifically developed for schools that may be able to service your request.
our priority communities
While our goal is to share headspace's services with everyone, we’re particularly invested in building connections and improving service access for young people in our priority communities, including:
- Young men
- Disengaged young people
- First Nations
- Culturally & Linguistically Diverse
- LGBTIQAP
Requests for community engagement will be prioritised in relation to these communities.
headspace Southport Youth Advisory Council
We believe in nothing for them, without them. That's why we welcome young people to join our Youth Advisory Council.
Our YAC is a passionate group of young people who work with our centre to give guidance and feedback, collaborate on events and campaigns, create social media and help make sure young people’s voices are being heard.
