Queer Prom 2022

A fruity formal for all LGBTQIA+ high school aged youth!

In a bid to create an event specifically for LGBTQIA+ youth, headspace approached new local community group Out Loud and Proud for assistance.  Keen to come on board, Out Loud & Proud  put together a fundraiser called ‘Bubbles & Bow Ties’ that raised funds directly to support headspace’s LGBTQIA+ social group ‘Rainbow Youth’.

Having funds secured and a venue donated by Rydges Port Macquarie, Rainbow Youth got together at their fortnightly catch up and workshopped the event and theme details - the result being Port Macquarie Queer Prom.

Headspace welcomed young people from all across Australia to dress up in their best outfits, meet new people, have a good time and be themselves, albeit a little spooky given the theme is Halloween/ Rocky Horror Show.

Queer Prom was a huge success with over 80 young people from the LGBTQIA+ community, as well their as friends and allies making new connections, eating great food and dancing the night away. The night was filled with colourful entertainers including a Drag performances by Enigma and local Youth Ambassador, Planchette, who wowed the audiences with their show stopping numbers.

Attendees spent the night getting their hair and make up done by the Andy Pandy Hair Candy and Work of Artistry style team. The craft corner was very busy with pronoun badge making, keychain making and shoelace decorating from the https://rainbowshoelaceproject.com.au/.

Those who were daring enough also had an opportunity to take to the stage either strutting their stuff in the costume parade, or having a go at Baby Drag (those new or starting out in drag) which was met with roaring applause.

headspace would like to acknowledge the overwhelming support and contributions made from the community, both from local businesses and community members that made Queer Prom such as successful event!
