Music Therapy

FREE sessions with a training music therapist.

What is Music Therapy?

Music therapy is a research-based practice and profession in which music is used to actively support people as they strive to improve their health, functioning and well-being. Our Music Therapy student incorporates a range of music-making methods within and through a therapeutic relationship to address individual client goals. These goals can include:

  • Improving mental health and wellbeing.
  • Skills in speech, communication and social skills.
  • Incorporating body movement, coordination and physical function.
  • Help with memory, attention and cognitive function.

These goals can be achieved in many ways during the sessions, and may include singing, song writing, musical improvisation, receptive music listening and other speciality techniques.

How Can Music Therapy Help?

Music Therapy uses trauma-informed, individually focused support to help young people engage and develop ways to process emotions, work on strategies to help manage these, and understand the role that music plays in our wellbeing.

During sessions this can look like:

  • Playing instruments or singing.
  • Listening to songs and talking about the lyrics or music.
  • Creating playlists for different moods.
  • Being more active with dancing or moving to music.

Music therapy can help you:

  • Make sense of tough feelings
  • Emotional and sensory regulation
  • Work through grief, anger, sadness or trauma
  • Understand yourself more deeply
  • Feel seen and supported without needing to talk much

It can be helpful when you are feeling:

  • Anxious or stressed
  • Sad or low
  • Stuck or unsure
  • Overwhelmed or angry
