Meet Carly, our new Adolescent Health Nurse!

We’re excited to introduce Carly, our new Adolescent Youth Nurse here at headspace Elsternwick. With a wealth of experience in paediatrics, sexual health, and school wellbeing programs, she is here to provide compassionate care and support to young people navigating the ups and downs of adolescence.

We caught up with Carly to learn more about the services she offers and how she can support young people.

Carly’s journey to land her at headspace has been driven by her passion for supporting young people, particularly with sexual health. "It’s something that’s often missing in the community, and there’s a real need for it," she said. Carly’s excited to bring her expertise to headspace, offering a safe, non-judgmental space for young people to get the care and information they need.

What Carly can support with

  • Sexual health education & support: a safe space to talk about sexual health, including contraception, STI education and screenings.

  • Support with general mental wellbeing: help with concerns around eating, self-harm, and other mental health challenges.

  • Substance use & lifestyle: whether it’s vaping, alcohol, or other substances, Carly works with young people to find strategies to manage and reduce risky behaviours.

  • General health concerns: support on sleep, lifestyle changes, and general wellbeing.

If something falls outside of Carly's expertise, she’ll ensure that young people are connected with the right services.

One area that Carly is particularly passionate about is supporting LGBTQIA+ young people, especially those in same-sex relationships. Having worked extensively with the queer community, she understands the unique challenges faced by queer youth in accessing sexual health education. Carly’s committed to creating a welcoming environment where every young person can feel safe asking questions and receiving accurate, inclusive support.

Why having youth-friendly healthcare services matters

Young people often face challenges when accessing healthcare, and Carly believes that providing youth-specific services is crucial. "Traditional health services can sometimes feel too formal or intimidating," she said, "and that’s why I love having a space that’s specifically for young people – somewhere they feel they can be themselves and talk openly without fear of being judged."

Her goal is to create an environment where every young person feels comfortable, supported, and empowered to take charge of their health and wellbeing.
