NAIDOC Week 2019

As the NAIDOC celebrations drew to a close, we reflected on the week and all of the fun that we had getting involved in many local events. We were honored to attend the Redlands NAIDOC event organized by our partner Yulu-Burri-Ba, the BBQ Lunch at Redlands Hospital, and the Family Fun Day at Musgrave Park to show our support. We had a lot of fun at the events and enjoyed meeting new people and celebrating the true heart of NAIDOC week. It was great to see so many members of our community and Elders of the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities coming together as one, to pay our respects, recognize our history and commit to moving forward together.

‘VOICE, TREATY, TRUTH’ was the theme of NAIDOC week 2019, and it represented 3 of the key elements to the Uluru Statement of the Heart that represents the unified position of First Nations Australians. It is recognized that the Uluru Statement of the Heart holds generations of grievances and that further reforms are necessary to uphold the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their communities.

headspace Capalaba is committed to recognizing the ongoing impact that the Stolen Generations and Colonisation still have on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their communities today. We value their cultures, identities, and continuing connection to country, waters, kin and community. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging, and are committed to making a positive contribution to the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people by providing services that are welcoming, safe, culturally appropriate and inclusive.

headspace Capalaba recognises that the true story of colonisation must be told for real healing to occur for both sides. We stand together and commit to working together for a brighter shared future. NAIDOC week was a great week and we were honoured to be a part of it!
