Fathers and Sons campaign launched

Football great and father of four boys, Nathan Hindmarsh, yesterday launched the national Fathers campaign at our very own headspace Bondi Junction!

As Ambassador for the Fathers campaign, he spoke about mental health, including depression, being an issue for many men, and the importance of fathers being open with and listening to their sons.

Adry Awan, member of our inaugural Youth Reference Group, shared how important the small gestures and affirmations his father makes are, in enabling him, as the son to open up and share his story with his father.

headspace CEO Jason Trethowan encouraged all Dads to start a conversation with their sons, about their mental health, and what is going on for them.

A lot of things go unsaid between young people and their parents, especially when it comes to mental health. Our Fathers Campaign aims to open up conversations between parents and young people, particularly fathers and sons, to help identify mental health issues and raise awareness of the support services available.

Young men have the largest rates of mental health issues, but are the least likely to seek help.  Research shows that only 13% of young men seek help for mental health issues.

A lot of things go unsaid between young people and their parents, especially when it comes to their mental health and wellbeing. Dads can play an important role in identifying the early signs and helping to provide young people with the support they need if they’re going through a tough time.
