Information about our Multicultural Family Peer Support at headspace Adelaide

 

Did you know we have a Multicultural Family Peer Practitioner here at headspace Adelaide?  

Connecting with culture can be a huge source of strength. As a young person growing up, it can also feel difficult when facing challenges, like: 

  • Feeling different with others 

  • Bullying, racism and discrimination 

  • Pressure to fit in 

  • Balancing cultural or family expectations 

These things may affect your young person’s wellbeing, but we are here to share that they don’t have to deal with it on their own. Families can be a great support by providing knowledge, supporting strengths and encouraging resilience within the young person.  

At headspace Adelaide, we respect your culture and identity, keep your information private, and offer free support. Please note: headspace is not a crisis support or emergency relief support service, and we are not a walk-in service.  

Our Multicultural Family Peer Practitioner works with parents and carers to share lived experience and cultural understanding, and to support family wellbeing.

Who Can Access This Service? 

To access support from a Multicultural Family Peer Practitioner: 

  • Your young person (aged 12-25) must be receiving support from our service. 

  • You, your family, or a close support person (such as a friend) identify as Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD). 

  • You are a parent, carer, guardian, family member, or friend supporting the young person. 

Participation in the service is free and voluntary, and a good opportunity for family members to work with a team who has lived experience in supporting a multicultural young person with their wellbeing.  

If you are unsure whether this service is right for you, please speak with your young person's clinician or support worker.

 

What to Expect After a Multicultural Family Peer (Support) Referral 

This is a free and voluntary service. You can choose if you would like to participate. 

After the referral is received, a Multicultural Family Peer Practitioner or headspace staff member will contact you to book an appointment. 

Appointments are usually offered within 2 weeks, depending on availability. Appointment times can fill quickly - so we ask you to let us know as early as possible beforehand if you are unable to attend. You can call us on 1800 063 267 and our friendly Support Services team will follow up with you to reschedule your appointment.  

Appointments are: 

  • Face-to-face, located at headspace Adelaide - 173 Wakefield Street, Adelaide 5000. 

  • Available by telehealth (phone or video call) upon request. 

You will receive a text message reminder a few days before your appointment.  

When you arrive, please let reception know you are here and the team will notify your worker. 

 

What To Expect at Your headspace Adelaide Multicultural Family Peer Appointment 

Appointments are usually 1 hour long. During the appointment, parents and carers will be supported to better understand and look after their wellbeing and learn practical ways to support the wellbeing of their family. 

Some of the ways that our team can provide support to your family are: 

  • sharing lived experience and cultural understanding of multicultural challenges 

  • sharing information about how to emotionally look after yourself, your young person and your family  

  • linking your family into wellbeing services and community supports 

You can ask questions about our service at any time, and no question is too big or too small.

 

After your headspace Adelaide Multicultural Family Peer Appointment – Next Steps 

After the appointment has finished, you will be asked to complete a short feedback survey called hAPI. This survey helps us improve our service, making sure that we are providing the best care to you and your family.
