headspace attends the NRL All Stars Game

On Friday 10 February, 2017, headspace attended the annual Rugby League All-Stars Game on Awabakal Country in Newcastle.

headspace had a stand out the front of the stadium, handing out information and Yarn Safe resources which promotes positive mental health for people in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. By handing out this information to game attendees, the headspace message was simple - to encourage young people and their families to look out for one another and seek help if they are going through a tough time.

headspace also had a photo booth set up where children, young people and their families could come and take photos to capture a memory of the day framed with the message, “no shame in talking it out #yarnsafe”.

The opening ceremony for the match demonstrated the significant role Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander cultures play in keeping our people strong, healthy, resilient and connected.

Yarn Safe Ambassadors Dane Gagai and Joel Thompson led the way on the pitch and did themselves, their families, communities and headspace proud and everyone had witnessed a strong Indigenous All Stars team smash the World All-Stars 34-8.

headspace staff from National Office and headspace Newcastle were very grateful for the opportunity to be involved on the day and to continue conversations around mental health and wellbeing with Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander young people and their families.
