-Youth Reference Group

What is it?

The Youth Reference group is one of the ways we involve young people in the development and implementation of our service here at headspace.

Youth participation enables young people to have a role in an organisation’s structure. It can include a range of consultation and decision-making activities that benefit the organisation and young people involved.

headspace practices a ‘youth-centred’ approach to youth participation. This means young people are meaningfully engaged in all aspects of the organisation and work in collaboration with headspace staff to improve the service.

In the eyes of headspace young people are the experts when it comes to youth health issues.

These groups are made up of young people passionate about mental health and well-being and youth engagement.

The groups aim to:

  • Provide young people with the opportunity to have input into the strategic direction of headspace services, and local youth services services
  • Allow a way for the voice of young people to be heard and acted upon
  • Provide opportunities for skills and leadership development
  • Support young people to lead projects locally
  • Be engaged in their local community

Young People on these committees will have the opportunity to be involved in a number of ways including:

  • Media spokespeople and community engagement opportunities
  • Lead local projects
  • Marketing, promotion and community awareness activities
  • Involvement in mental health related focus groups and consultations
  • Evaluation, research, policy and advocacy.

Whatever is a group designed to give young people who identify as LGBTIQ+ a safe place to engage with others. It can also provide a platform to promote and advocate for LGBTIQ+ events and issues.

Headspace heroes is a supportive group where you can join us to play Dungeons and Dragons. Make friends while you have fun, improve your social skills and build confidence while learning to run your own adventures as a volunteer.

Geek club is a safe space for you to hang out and make new friends with other young people who share your passion for video games, anime, manga, tabletop role playing games, superheroes, and any other fandom you may be a part of. Come along to Geek club and play games, talk freely about your interest and share them with other members.

Create, Make & Relate is the perfect group for creative young people. Meet and socialise with others who share your creative passions. Get education and practical skills around mental health, hygiene, healthy eating and drinking and sexual health in a safe environment.
