Youth Reference Group

headspace Albury Wodonga and headspace Wangaratta

The headspace Albury Wodonga and headspace Wangaratta Youth Reference Group are a voluntary group of likeminded young people aged 16-25, who are passionate about youth mental health and wellbeing. The YRG provide a youth-perspective towards our centre operations, service offerings, processes and procedures.

They attend monthly meetings to discuss community trends, centre operations and centre projects, and collaborate with our team at headspace to organise and promote upcoming youth events, social media content, and community projects.

Poppy (she/her)

Poppy enjoys all things art; watercolour, alcohol inks, acrylic... she'll give anything a go!

Poppy joined YRG because she thinks youth mental health is really important, and advocacy should begin from within. Early intervention is crucial in preventing issues from snowballing.

healthy headspace advice from Poppy: "The advice I’d give to someone going through a tough time would be that it is okay to not be okay, and you are not alone."

Alanah (she/her)

Alanah loves to read fantasy, literary fiction and romance novels, and has recently gotten into tennis and golf!

Alanah joined YRG as a way to contribute to the community. She loves living in this region and wants to give back and support other young people growing up, ensuring they have services that are safe, affirming and accessible.

healthy headspace advice from Alanah: "Look to the people around you. Sometimes it can feel scary to talk about personal problems with your friends and family but they can often provide support and help you find professional help if needed."

Lucy (she/her)

Lucy enjoys going to the gym, spending time with friends and family, and taking her dog for a walk.

Lucy joined YRG because she is passionate about mental health and supporting young people. She wanted to be part of something where young people can have a voice, feel connected, and help make a positive impact on the community.

healthy headspace advice from Lucy: "You're definitely not alone, even if it feels like it sometimes. It's okay to ask for help and lean on people you trust. Be kind to yourself, take things one day at a time, and remember that tough times don't last forever.

Alison (she/her)

Alison loves pilates and weight training, and cooking dishes from different cultures that she has tried whilst eating out. She is also a "let's try that new restaurant person" too!

Alison joined YRG to use her lived experience to reduce the stigma associated with speaking about mental health. She wanted to be a part of space where she could advocate for early conversations around mental health, and support young people to seek help.

Healthy headspace advice from Alison: "Be honest with yourself about what you're feeling, even if it's uncomfortable or messy. You don't have to wait until things get really bad to "deserve" support. Talk to someone you trust, write things down, and give yourself permission to slow down."

Abbey (she/her)

Abbey loves getting involved with anything creative and hands on, whether that's talking her dogs for a walk, starting a new weekend project (redecorating or reorganising mostly). She also enjoys downtime with her friends and family, listening to music or a podcast, and enjoys binge-watching days to recharge.

Abbey joined YRG to expand her knowledge and experience in the mental health field. This is something that Abbey is passionate about, and wants to learn more about how she can support young people in meaningful ways. Being part of YRG has opened her eyes as to how important youth voices are when it comes to shaping services and support.

Healthy headspace advice from Abbey: "You don't have to have everything figured out. Take it one step at a time, and don't be afraid to lean on people around you, even if it's just to say "i'm not okay". Find small things that help you on days that you're not feeling great, such as having a long, warm shower".
