headspace congratulates First People’s Assembly of Victoria on history treaty

headspace acknowledges and celebrates the historic treaty with Aboriginal people – Australia’s first ever – which was formalised in law today.

As Treaty for Victoria explains, the Treaty for First Peoples means that the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria will now be a permanent representative and decision-making body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Victoria.

It comes after years of consultation between Indigenous leaders and government.

“Congratulations to the First People’s Assembly of Victoria and all involved in bringing Treaty to life,” said Daniel Knapp, the Executive Director First Nation's Wellbeing and Engagement at headspace.

“This milestone reflects what can be achieved when truth, respect, courage and collaboration guide the way, setting an example for other states and territories follow.

“It’s a proud moment for Victoria and for First Nations people across the country and I'm sure it gives strength and hope to all young people.”
