Info for Parents and Guardians

headspace National’s Participation & Lived Experience team is coordinating this program in partnership with Movember. headspace has 18 years experience of engaging young people and family in participation programs where young people can contribute to matters that impact them.

Our staff are qualified, credentialed and supported by the headspace Clinical Governance Framework to ensure safe and effective programs for young people.

This project will be delivered by our experienced Participation Coordinator and young Lived Experience staff and supported by the Head of Participation and the National Clinical Manager.

You can also contact James Malcolm on 0437 568 830 or jmalcolm@headspace.org.au if you would like to speak to anyone to get more information.

headspace and Movember believes that young people are experts in their own lives and have the right to be involved in matters that impact them.

Their experiences of being a young person living in the world today are unique and add valuable insights into how organisations develop and deliver essential programs and services. Your young person’s perspectives are critical to our work, and we run programs to safely support them to share their views and experiences.

Young men will be asked about key Movember projects in sports, e-sports and e-gaming as well as what future youth action councils could be like. We will ask them questions to learn what is important to them, how do they engage with or receive information about their mental and physical health, what they think of our project, campaign or event ideas and how they think other young men might respond to them.

If there was a need to talk about sensitive topics, we will put additional supports in place as guided by our Clinical Governance Framework. This includes things like making sure the conversation has a clear purpose, young people and their family know that we are having the conversation and that they can choose not to attend or opt out at any point, and the discussion will be supported by a relevant professional (clinical advisor, drug and alcohol specialist, youth worker, etc).

headspace National operates under a Clinical Governance Framework, which sets clear expectations for the level of safety and quality that young people and family should expect when engaging with services run by headspace National. The Clinical Governance Framework outlines the key governance structures and approaches to shaping service delivery applicable to all headspace services.

The Clinical Governance Framework works in conjunction with cultural governance and corporate governance and serves as a vital guiding document that underpins participation commitments and activities, enabling headspace to achieve its quality and safety goals both now and in the future.

We will ensure Mo-YAC has sufficient safeguarding supports for your young person to participate effectively, including:

  • Guidance and oversight from the National Clinical Manager of all project activities

  • Option to have a support person to travel with them to in-person events in Melbourne, with all expenses paid

  • Upon registration, we will ask for accessibility requirements so that we can plan an inclusive program and arrange adequate supports that will allow everyone to participate effectively

  • Confidentiality of your young person’s contributions will be maintained unless given specific permission by yourself and your young person

  • In an emergency, emergency services will be called

  • headspace National will hold the duty of care for your young person whilst they attend Mo-YAC activities

  • Participation in the program must include informed consent from the young person and their parent / guardian if they are under the age of 18yrs, including medical and media consent

  • You will be able to contact your young person and staff during event and travel periods
