Finding confidence and independence with headspace

Vlad’s story

Struggling with anxiety, depression, and low motivation, and feeling unsupported by his current employment services provider, Vlad turned to headspace Onkaparinga for help. Through the integrated services available at headspace, Vlad was able to access tailored support for both his mental health and work and study needs.

Beginning the journey

When Vlad began his journey with the headspace Work & Study program and first met with Ruth, his Employment Specialist, he was shy, avoided eye contact, and found it difficult to communicate due to his anxiety. His mum often spoke on his behalf during appointments. Having completed Year 11 but not pursued any further study or employment, Vlad spent most of his time gaming at night and sleeping during the day. His primary goal was to find work and regain a sense of purpose.

Building confidence and setting goals

Ruth worked with Vlad to take small, manageable steps toward his goals. They met regularly, with his mum helping him get to appointments as his anxiety made public transport challenging. Together, they discussed ways to make his commute more manageable, including sitting near the bus driver for reassurance. Ruth also offered to accompany Vlad on the bus, but he declined, showing a willingness to try on his own.

A key focus was building Vlad’s confidence. Ruth and Vlad created a resume, set up a SEEK profile, and practiced job search and interview techniques. They identified the fast-food industry as a good starting point for his first job. Ruth also encouraged Vlad to enrol in a basic retail course at TAFE, helping him to establish a routine and step out of his comfort zone.

Finding employment

Soon after, Ruth connected Vlad with Aleshia, a store manager at KFC. Although nervous and underdressed for the initial meeting, Vlad’s determination impressed Aleshia. He was offered a traineeship, providing him with 15 hours of work per week and a Certificate III in Retail. This marked a significant turning point for Vlad, who proudly shared the news with his family.

A life transformed

Since starting work in March 2024, Vlad’s life has transformed. His confidence has grown significantly—he now manages public transport independently, communicates more openly, and has even moved out of home to live with friends. With additional support from Anglicare’s Financial Counselling Services, Vlad has learned to manage his finances and is saving for his first car. His relationship with his mum has also strengthened, and they enjoy regular visits, sharing meals and catching up.

Reflecting on the journey

Reflecting on his progress, Vlad shared, “If I hadn’t joined headspace and switched to the Work & Study program, I’d probably still be at home gaming and feeling miserable.” His mum is equally proud, calling him a “changed kid”—more mature, responsible, and independent.

Ruth, his Employment Specialist, is also thrilled with his progress: “Vlad has come such a long way, and it’s been incredible to watch him grow. He’s applied himself and is now thriving both at work and in life. Employment has truly motivated him to become the best version of himself.”

Vlad’s journey is a testament to the power of dedicated support, and his story is just one example of how the headspace Work & Study program helps young people find their path to independence.
