2025 Youth Art Competition - Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander

13 May 2025

Artwork by Emma-Jayde Chapman; Mutti Mutti Aboriginal artist living on Yuin Country.

A Creation Story about 'Wilangi' Mutti Mutti language word meaning wind.

When the wind comes, it blows the seeds around, spreading creation out across the land. The spirit of the wind holds wisdom in expansion, growth and the spreading of the beautiful colours that makes Mother Earth so vibrant. Through the wind we hear the whispers of the Ancestors.

Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Youth Art Competition– 2025

Target Audience: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people between the ages of 12 – 25, located in the Shoalhaven region, NSW.

Thanks to a Wellbeing Grant in 2024, headspace Nowra organized an art competition for Aboriginal young artists. The winners received fantastic prizes, and all participants had the chance to showcase their work at the NAIDOC Family Fun Day at the Nowra Showground. Two local artists served as judges for the competition, and there was also a People’s Choice Award, with over 150 votes cast during the NAIDOC exhibition. As a result, the young artists' work was on display at the Worrigee Medical Centre for a time, allowing the broader community to continue appreciating and learning about their art and stories.

About the project

Although the Wellbeing Grant is not available in 2025, the team at headspace Nowra decided that, due to the success of the competition last year, we would run it again with the added opportunity for participants to put their artwork up for sale during exhibition opportunities.
