Freo Pride Fest 2024
Freo Pride Fest was vibrant celebration of connection and community with over 7000 attendees to kick off Pride Month here in WA, with over 30 market stalls, community groups, key LGBTQIA+ stakeholders and entertainers.
3 queer youth musicians Tim Velacrus, Project BEXX and Indigo Ellis also performed on the day and attendees could also experience free glitter tattoos, a photo booth and LGBT focused pop-up book shop from Freo favourite New Edition!
Online radio station Youth Jam did a live broadcast from the event, while queer owned business Fit Bomb were also promoting their gender affirming fitness classes to the community.
The event was also an opportunity for queer young people to sell their creative wares from clothing, earrings, stickers and so much more, with many of their stalls selling out of stock.
Community groups including Freedom Centre, Palmerston, PFLAG, Transfolk WA, Dykes on Bikes and St Pats were also on hand to talk about their organisations and promote their services. Youth Pride Network ran screen printing activities and attendees could also contribute to a mural painting by local Walyalup Artist Maggie Smith which will be hung in Fremantle Library. Attendees could also join in on dry clay pottery workshop, skateboarding and circus activities.
An Author Talk held in the Fremantle Library with Holden Sheppard (Invisible Boys) in conversation with queer youth creative Angela Aris drew a capacity crowd.
Holden shared his experiences of growing up in Geraldton as an LGBTQIA+ young person heavily influenced his debut novel Invisible Boys. The book is set against the backdrop of the 2017 same-sex marriage plebiscite and delves into the challenges faced by a group of gay teens in the remote coastal town. The book has been adapted for a TV series, that was recently filmed in Geraldton and locally in Fremantle and John Curtin College that will air on Stan in 2025.
headspace Fremantle's Youth Group ran a headspace information stall and a low sensory space throughout the event for attendees with activities and fidgets available.
Fremantle's only LGBTQIA+ venue the Flaming Galah hosted the official afterparty for attendees.
