Matteo’s headspace Work & Study journey: From isolation to inspiration

When Matteo first reached out to the team at headspace Edinburgh North, he was looking for support to manage his mental health and work towards several important personal goals.

At the time, Matteo had left his high school and was studying Year 10 online from home. Without the social interaction students typically enjoy in the classroom, Matteo felt increasingly isolated – and it was affecting his wellbeing.

At headspace Edinburgh North, Matteo connected with Rob, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Youth Peer Practitioner. Rob’s lived experience offered valuable support and encouragement. Together, they explored ways to build Matteo’s confidence and work towards his goals of re-engaging with everyday life.

One of Matteo’s goals was to find a part-time job. He was eager to take steps toward independence, so Rob enlisted the help of Adam, headspace Work & Study Specialist, to help kick-start the job search.

Adam supported Matteo to prepare for work by building a resume, submitting job applications, and developing key skills through ‘Thinking Skills for Work’, a one-on-one program tailored to his needs.

A major turning point came when Matteo was supported to return to his former high school in Year 11. Back among familiar faces and old friends, he started participating in class and social activities. Slowly, he discovered a new love for school.

With school back on track, Matteo turned his attention to employment. Adam supported him to develop soft skills, interview techniques, and confidence, which resulted in Matteo securing a casual job at Coles after school and on weekends. This balance between education and part-time work was carefully supported by headspace, ensuring Matteo’s wellbeing remained top priority.

These significant changes also helped Matteo begin to conquer another of his goals: to build the confidence to approach people and have conversations with them.

Shauna Marrone, Individual Placement and Support Program Coordinator, oversees Work and Study program delivery across the Sonder-led headspace centres.

The headspace Work and Study program is tailored and individualised to meet each person’s personal vocational goals,” Shauna says.

“Whether they’re looking for a first job, re-entering the workforce, or choosing a study path, the employment specialists can ensure that a scaffolded plan is developed in tandem with mental health supports.”

No longer a quiet and lonely student studying alone at home, Matteo has made incredible progress. With the ongoing support of headspace, he’s slowly stepping out of his comfort zone and building the skills and confidence to create a brighter future.
