Calling all young and emerging artists!

Showcase your creativity and make a difference in youth mental health with this unique opportunity.

Local gallery Ministry of Art in Highett is holding a charity art show on Thursday 22 August 2024 to raise funds for headspace Bentleigh’s Early Psychosis program and headspace youth-led projects.

How does it work? The Ministry of Art provides free canvases to art competition entrants who create an artwork based on a theme. An evening event is held at the gallery with cash prizes awarded and a silent auction of all the paintings.

This year, artists must incorporate the colour “blue” into their artwork.

Ministry of Art director Andrew Rutter says the gallery has always strived to support young and emerging artists.

“Through COVID we saw the heavy toll the shutdown took on young artists,” he said. “We resolved to do all we could to support the mental health of young artists once lockdowns ceased.

“We have successfully run two charity art shows to raise funds in support of headspace and are seeking to make the third show this year the best yet!”

Andrew says creating an artwork for the show is a great opportunity for local artists to gain exposure for their art.

“The art show is free to enter, we supply canvasses, and artists have the opportunity for their art to be seen (and purchased) in support of a great cause,” he says.

In the past, the show has attracted artwork from artistic young people who use headspace services as well as local artists who wish to support headspace through the donation of their art.

headspace Early Psychosis South East Melbourne manager Paul Bennetts says the annual fundraiser is a welcome boost to the program’s funds.

“Community fundraisers such as the Ministry of Art provide funds for music, art and nature-based activities for young people who are recovering from early psychosis and other mental health conditions.”
