We are here to support young people aged 12-25.  We offer free services on mental health, physical and sexual health, alcohol and other drugs, as well as work and study support with our IPS program.

headspace Tamworth is operated by Centacare New England North West. All headspace services are funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care. Administration of funding is carried out by the headspace centre’s local Primary Health Network, in this case, Hunter New England and Central Coast (HNECC LTD).

Services

Nutrition screening, dietary assessment and education about food and lifestyle, also support around healthy eating strategies.

Get tips on how to prepare your resume and present for interviews. Find out about local employment opportunities (full time, part-time, or casual).

Mental health workers – which may include psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors and other workers – that can help if you're just not feeling yourself.

Sexual health screenings on site or links to local services. 

Workers either on site or linked to the centre who can assist you with work or study opportunities. 

Centres have a range of programs and activities for young people. Just ask your centre what they have on. 

Your GP can refer you to see a specialist youth psychiatrist for bulk billed assessment and management advice for mental health issues.

If you live near our headspace centre in a rural area but cannot travel in to see us, you can see our mental health workers online.

GPs can help with any physical health issues as well as issues related to sexual health, drug or alcohol use, relationship problems or feeling down or upset. Your centre may have a GP on site or links to one locally. 

Workers either on site or linked to the centre who can assist you with any alcohol or other drug concern.

About headspace Tamworth

headspace Tamworth offers free youth-friendly early intervention services and support to young people aged 12 – 25 years (and their family and friends) experiencing mild to moderate difficulties in four key areas:

  • Mental health
  • Physical and sexual health
  • Work and study
  • Alcohol and other drugs

 

headspace Tamworth’s service providers work together to make it as easy as possible for young people and their family and friends to access the support they require including making referrals to other services internally and externally.

 

The services available at headspace Tamworth include:

  • Therapeutic support and intervention with a Mental Health Worker
  • Psychiatrist
  • General Practitioner
  • Nurse
  • Dietician
  • Vocational and Educational support
  • Alcohol and Other Drug counselling and support

 

headspace Tamworth is not an acute or crisis mental health service.  If you or a young person you are supporting have any immediate concerns regarding the safety or wellbeing of a young person, please call the Mental Health Line on 1800 011 511, Lifeline on 13 11 14; or Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800. In an emergency, contact 000 immediately.

Young people are encouraged to make contact with the service by:

Drop in: Young people can walk-ins and complete the referral form between 8:45am – 5pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Thursday from 8:45am – 7:00pm. 

• Family, Friend or Carer Referral
Families, friends and/ or carers can refer a young person to headspace via phone and fax or email using the referral form on the website.  The young person needs to be aware of and consent to the referral and be willing to meet with a member from the headspace team.

• Professional Referral
GP’s, Allied Health Professionals, community-based agencies and educational institutions can refer young people to headspace via fax or email using the referral form on the website.

GP’s are encouraged to include a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) if appropriate.  Referrals from tertiary health services are encouraged to include an A1 or discharge summary if appropriate.

It may be necessary to have a Medicare card for some services (this can be your parents/carers card if you are listed) if not, you can apply for your own Medicare card

 

Administration staff will send a text message to confirm the receipt of the referral for young people, family, friend and/ or carer. As well notify the referrer eg:GP’s, Allied Health Professionals, community-based agencies and educational with a letter/email to acknowledge that the referral has been received.

 

If you require Translator support, this can be arranged for you via the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) National.  TIS can be contacted on 131 450.  If you require Auslan Interpreter support, young people can access Auslan interpreters via their eheadspace account.  For young people and their families/friends who have a hearing impairment please contact:

Parking

headspace Tamworth has client and disability parking available next to the V Guy Kable Building. Other parking relates to the centrepoint free 2-hour parking and the Kmart Plaza free 3-hour parkng. There is a bus stop at the front of the building and the train station is a 2 minute walk from the headspace Tamworth Centre.

 

Accessibility

The headspace Tamworth centre has been designed to ensure it is a welcoming space including those with disabilities - you can listen to music, grab a drink, read a book from our book swap. 

The centre is an accessible building site with wheel chair access via the front entry. Our toilets available inside the centre and a disabled access toilet is also accessible.

There are a number of roles you can play in a headspace local reference group, including:

-          Research and evaluation of headspace services

-          Consultation around resource development such as, fact sheets, brochures, merchandise and more

-          Peer support and mentoring

-          Upskilling in project management and other courses

By getting involved you will:
