headspace Hawthorn offers young people aged 12-25 a welcoming environment where they can access confidential mental health support, health advice and general information. We are an inclusive service and a safe space for all young people, family and friends.

How do I make an appointment?

To make an initial appointment or to speak to someone, you can call us on (03) 9006 6500 or fill out an online referral form. 

If you're not feeling up to contacting us yourself, you can ask a family member, friend, teacher, doctor or someone close to you to make the call with you.

headspace Hawthorn is operated by Access Health and Community. All headspace services are funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care. Administration of funding is carried out by the headspace centre’s local Primary Health Network, in this case, Eastern Melbourne PHN.

Services

Mental health workers – which may include psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors and other workers – that can help if you're just not feeling yourself.

Workers either on site or linked to the centre who can assist you with any alcohol or other drug concern.

Centres have a range of programs and activities for young people. Just ask your centre what they have on. 

GPs can help with any physical health issues as well as issues related to sexual health, drug or alcohol use, relationship problems or feeling down or upset. Your centre may have a GP on site or links to one locally. 

A group of young people who help with events and some decision making at a centre. Ask your centre about getting involved.

You will ensure that young people seeking counselling are linked in with family, community and friendships networks, have pathways to education and workforce participation and have access to a range of support and services in relation to health, housing and developmental needs.

Reporting to the Manager, headspace Hawthorn & Malvern, you will welcome young people and their family and friends with hope and empathy, using a ‘no wrong door’ approach. You will undertake mental health assessments, develop goals in collaboration with the young person and work with family/friends and other professionals to coordinate care. This work will be supported by the multidisciplinary team and Senior Clinician at headspace Hawthorn to ensure a holistic approach to the young person’s care.

Services may be delivered in person or via telehealth and based on site at headspace Hawthorn.

What you will be doing

 Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake assessments
  • Deliver ‘session by session’ (single session) support and brief interventions where appropriate.
  • Provide short- medium term evidence-informed psychological interventions to a caseload of young people, their family and friends
  • Work collaboratively with schools, community groups and other key people in the young person’s life
  • Assess, monitor and proactively manage clinical risk
  • Actively participate and work cooperatively within the multidisciplinary team, collaborative partner organisations and with young people, family/friends, referrers and other stakeholders
  • Ensure clinical files are maintained to a high standard to facilitate good clinical management and accountability and that other reporting requirements are documented within required timeframes to a high standard

What you will bring

 Key Selection Criteria

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in psychology or social work
  • Current registration with AHPRA as a psychologist, or registration with the AASW as a Mental Health Social Worker
  • Demonstrated experience working in youth, mental health, alcohol and other drugs, community or similar health services (minimum two years’ experience is preferred)
  • Experience and recognised training in clinical risk assessment and management (including suicide risk assessment)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant software applications

As the Senior Clinician, reporting to the Manager, headspace South Melbourne as well as co-located services, you will ensure young people and their family and friends are welcomed into the service with hope and empathy, using a ‘no wrong door’ approach.  You will provide clinical leadership and supervision to a multidisciplinary team of multidisciplinary practitioners to ensure a holistic approach to the young person’s care. The team will undertake mental health assessments, develop goals in collaboration with the young person and work with family/friends and other professionals to coordinate care.

You will be supported by the headspace Manager South Melbourne to ensure that evidence-based clinical practice standards are met and that young people accessing headspace South Melbourne receive high quality services which consider their developmental, clinical, social, family and other needs. Services may be delivered in person or via telehealth and based on site at headspace South Melbourne.

What you will be doing

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group-based clinical supervision to all clinical staff at headspace South Melbourne. Provide clinical/field supervision and support to placement students to support workforce development
  • Support clinical staff to undertake assessment, develop and review care plans, and deliver evidence-informed treatment to young people and families
  • Provide clinical support and secondary consultation to staff, in-kind service providers and private practitioners working from headspace South Melbourne
  • Assess, monitor and respond to clinical risk, including developing and implementing strengths-based safety plans with young people/families
  • Support the headspace team to ensure safe and timely response to enquiries, new referrals and bookings that focusses on welcome, hope and empathy
  • Provide clinical leadership to the team and chair relevant clinical meetings, including group supervision and case review meetings
  • Support clinicians to engage in person-centred trauma-informed treatment and work from a shared care model (engaging with GPs, health professionals and families)
  • Support the headspace Manager South Melbourne to ensure that headspace South Melbourne delivers services that meet quality and accreditation standards (including hMIF-headspace Model Integrity Framework and the National Standards for Mental Health Services) and align with the AccessHC Clinical Governance Framework
  • Ensure a ‘no wrong door’ response is provided by headspace South Melbourne staff to all young people and their families and friends presenting for support, including (but not limited to) working in a dual-diagnosis framework and ensuring that young people with mental health, alcohol and other drug and other co-occurring issues feel that all their needs are welcomed by the service
  • Ensure that clinical risk is assessed, monitored and managed by all team members in a proactive manner
  • Actively participate and work cooperatively within the multidisciplinary team, collaborative partner organisations and with young people, family/friends, referrers and other stakeholders
  • Ensure clinical files are maintained to a high standard to facilitate good clinical management and accountability and that other reporting requirements are documented within required timeframes to a high standard

What you will bring

 Key Selection Criteria

  • Postgraduate qualifications in psychology and current registration with AHPRA as a Psychologist or Clinical Psychologist.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with families and young people in mental health/AOD settings for a minimum of 5 years
  • Demonstrated high level of skill in clinical risk assessment and management, including assessing for risk of suicide, self-harm and other risk domains
  • Recognised qualifications/training and demonstrated experience in the provision of clinical supervision
  • Registered with AHPRA as a Board-Approved Clinical Supervisor, or ability to register within first six months of employment
  • Demonstrated ability to work creatively and respectfully with people from a diverse range of social, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, including LGBTIQA+, culturally and linguistically diverse, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities

An Access Key is a document that describes a physical space and how to access it. We have written an Access Key for our headspace Centre in Hawthorn.

Access Keys are used to describe the features of a venue. This includes getting to our Centre as well as navigating the inside space. They are designed to be suitable for all people, regardless of ability. 

Not all places and spaces are easy to access. We hope our Access Key will give young people more agency and control over how they participate.

headspace Hawthorn provides mental health support and counselling to young people aged 12-25, and their family, friends and carers. 

We provide one-on-one counselling, group therapy programs, family therapy and mental health promotion and education.

We have a number of services available including:

At headspace Hawthorn, we have youth-friendly doctors who can assist you with a range of health-related issues. 

Our doctors take the time to listen to you. Dr Yok Lee and Dr Mey Wong offer long appointments to get to know you and understand your concerns. GP appointments are free with a Medicare card for young people aged 12-25. Appointments are available in-person, by phone or video.

How to book an appointment?

New clients: If you haven't seen a GP at headspace before, please complete a registration formOnce received, someone from the reception team will call you to organise an appointment.

Where to find help when our GP's aren't available:

There may be times when you need medical care and our doctors aren't available. If this happens, there are a few options available to you depending on the support you need. These include:

  • Emergency Services: Triple zero (000) is the number to call for ambulance, police or fire services in an emergency. Only call triple zero (000) if the situation is serious and urgent.
  • Richmond Priority Primary Care Centre (PPCC): PPCC is for when you need urgent attention, but not an emergency response. They provide free urgent treatment for conditions like mild infections and burns, suspected fractures or broken bones. Services are free, and available to people with or without a Medicare card.
  • Access Health & Community (lead agency): AccessHC have GP’s available Mon-Fri at their Hawthorn and Richmond sites. New clients can make an appointment by calling reception on 03 9810 3000. Existing headspace Hawthorn, headspace Malvern and AccessHC clients can book online via HotDocs or by calling 03 9810 3000.
  • DoctorDoctor: DoctorDoctor provides after hours, bulk billed GP appointments. They are available between 6pm to 8am Monday-Friday,
    12pm Saturday to 8am Monday and Public Holidays. If you require an after-hours appointment, you can
    call DoctorDoctor on 13 26 60 or book via their website. 
  • Find another GP local to you

We know that it can be overwhelming when using a new service for the first time. We have provided some information so you know what to expect in your first appointment.

In your first appointment, we will take the time to get to know you and hear your story. Your first visit may be in-person, on the phone or by video. 

At the first visit, you will:

  • Complete a brief survey
  • Talk to a headspace worker
  • Be given the opportunity to share what's been impacting your wellbeing in different areas of your life
  • Talk about goals you might want to work on


We will talk to you about important topics like your privacy, confidentiality, rights and responsibilities.

How much does it cost? 

headspace Hawthorn is predominantly a free service.  

Some of our programs are covered under Medicare. To apply for a Medicare card, please click on this link 

What if I can't get a Medicare card? 

Most of our services are free. When you contact us, our team will help you to link in with a support that is best suited to you, depending on your goals and needs. We suggest filling out an online referral form or calling headspace Hawthorn on 9006 6500 to chat further with our team.

How do I get to headspace Hawthorn?

We are located above the Hawthorn Arts Centre at  Level 1, 360 Burwood Road, Hawthorn just near the corner of Glenferrie and Burwood Roads. Glenferrie train station is 200 meters away on Glenferrie Road. Tram stop 73 for the number 16 tram is only 50 meters away on Burwood Road. There is 2 hour parking available behind headspace on Kent Street. You can find more information located in our Access Key

Is there disability access at headspace Hawthorn?

We know that not all places and spaces are easy to access. We have created an Access Key for headspace Hawthorn which describes the features of our centre. You can read our Access Key here.

Our Centre is inside the Hawthorn Arts Centre on level one. There are automatic doors at the building entrance, and an elevator which can be used to get to level one. We also have gender neutral bathrooms.

Is there a volunteer program at headspace Hawthorn?

headspace Hawthorn & headspace Malvern provides young people aged 16-24 with the opportunity to take action in improving the mental health and wellbeing of young people in the community through our Youth Advisory Group (YAG).

The YAG develops and delivers community events and projects and provides feedback to the centre on how we can improve youth mental health services. 

YAG members have the opportunity to expand their skills and knowledge in advocacy, public speaking, project management and mental health.

Can I do a placement with headspace Hawthorn?

We offer a small number of placements which are organised directly with our partner university. Unfortunately we cannot accommodate placement requests from other students.

Can I do work experience or an internship with headspace Hawthorn?

Unfortunately we do not currently offer internships or work experience opportunities. However, if you have recently qualified as an Occupational Therapists, Psychologist, or Social Worker in the last three years, the headspace National graduate program may interest you. We do not charge fees for missed appointments and would like to keep it that way. Please help us do this by letting us know when you can't attend!
