headspace Hawthorn offers young people aged 12-25 a welcoming environment where they can access confidential mental health support, health advice and general information. We are an inclusive service and a safe space for all young people, family and friends.
How do I make an appointment?
To make an initial appointment or to speak to someone, you can call us on (03) 9006 6500 or fill out an online referral form.
If you're not feeling up to contacting us yourself, you can ask a family member, friend, teacher, doctor or someone close to you to make the call with you.

headspace Hawthorn is operated by Access Health and Community. All headspace services are funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care. Administration of funding is carried out by the headspace centre’s local Primary Health Network, in this case, Eastern Melbourne PHN.
Services
Mental health workers – which may include psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors and other workers – that can help if you're just not feeling yourself.
Workers either on site or linked to the centre who can assist you with any alcohol or other drug concern.
Centres have a range of programs and activities for young people. Just ask your centre what they have on.
GPs can help with any physical health issues as well as issues related to sexual health, drug or alcohol use, relationship problems or feeling down or upset. Your centre may have a GP on site or links to one locally.
A group of young people who help with events and some decision making at a centre. Ask your centre about getting involved.

The opportunity
Are you passionate about youth mental health and early intervention? headspace Hawthorn is seeking a qualified Intake & Brief Intervention Clinician to be the first point of contact for young people aged 12–25 and their support networks. This is an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact through trauma-informed care, short-term psychological support, and evidence-based brief interventions. What you will be doing Key Responsibilities
- Provide intake, assessment, Single Session and Brief Interventions to young people aged 12-25 years
- Assist and advocate with referrals to appropriate supports
- As part of the wider intake team, assist in the managing of duty calls, services enquiries, new referrals, scheduling Single Session and Intake appointments
- Provide case management/care coordination to a small number of young people with complex and chronic risk
What you will bring Key Selection Criteria
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in mental health, alcohol and other drugs, social work, psychology, youth work or other relevant discipline
- Demonstrated experience working in youth mental health, alcohol and other drugs, community or similar health services (minimum two years’ experience)
- Experience and qualifications in Single Session and/or Brief Intervention
- Experience and recognised training in clinical risk assessment and management
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant software applications

We know that it can be overwhelming when using a new service for the first time. We have provided some information so you know what to expect in your first appointment.
In your first appointment, we will take the time to get to know you and hear your story. Your first visit may be in-person, on the phone or by video.
At the first visit, you will:
- Complete a brief survey
- Talk to a headspace worker
- Be given the opportunity to share what's been impacting your wellbeing in different areas of your life
- Talk about goals you might want to work on

After your initial appointment, our team will provide recommendations of supports that are best suited for you, depending on your goals and needs. These supports may be at headspace Hawthorn, or another local organisation.

headspace Hawthorn provides mental health and wellbeing support to young people aged 12-25, and their family, friends and carers.
We have a number of services available at our centre, these include:
- Counselling
- Youth-friendly GP’s (bulk-billed)
- Drug and alcohol support
- Work and Study support
- Family Counselling
- Peer Support
- Mental health promotion and education
- Group programs
Our services can be offered face-to-face or via telehealth (phone/video) and are usually free, or bulk billed with a Medicare card. If you’re an international student or don’t have access to Medicare, you may still be able to access our services. We can chat to you about what supports we offer and help you to contact your private health insurer if needed.

An Access Key is a document that describes a physical space and how to access it. We have written an Access Key for our headspace Centre in Hawthorn.
Access Keys are used to describe the features of a venue. This includes getting to our Centre as well as navigating the inside space. They are designed to be suitable for all people, regardless of ability.
Not all places and spaces are easy to access. We hope our Access Key will give young people more agency and control over how they participate.

At headspace Hawthorn, we have youth-friendly doctors who can assist you with a range of health-related issues.
Our doctors take the time to listen to you. Dr Yok Lee and Dr Mey Wong offer long appointments to get to know you and understand your concerns. GP appointments are free with a Medicare card for young people aged 12-25. Appointments are available in-person, by phone or video.

How to book an appointment?
New clients: If you haven't seen a GP at headspace before, please complete a registration form. Once received, someone from the reception team will call you to organise an appointment.
Existing clients: Please call (03) 9006 6500 or book via HotDocs.
Where to find help when our GP's aren't available:
There may be times when you need medical care and our doctors aren't available. If this happens, there are a few options available to you depending on the support you need. These include:
- Emergency Services: Triple zero (000) is the number to call for ambulance, police or fire services in an emergency. Only call triple zero (000) if the situation is serious and urgent.
- Richmond Priority Primary Care Centre (PPCC): PPCC is for when you need urgent attention, but not an emergency response. They provide free urgent treatment for conditions like mild infections and burns, suspected fractures or broken bones. Services are free, and available to people with or without a Medicare card.
- Access Health & Community (lead agency): AccessHC have GP’s available Mon-Fri at their Hawthorn and Richmond sites. New clients can make an appointment by calling reception on 03 9810 3000. Existing headspace Hawthorn, headspace Malvern and AccessHC clients can book online via HotDocs or by calling 03 9810 3000.
- DoctorDoctor: DoctorDoctor provides after hours, bulk billed GP appointments. They are available between 6pm to 8am Monday-Friday,
12pm Saturday to 8am Monday and Public Holidays. If you require an after-hours appointment, you can
call DoctorDoctor on 13 26 60 or book via their website. - Find another GP local to you
How much does it cost?
The majority of supports at headspace Hawthorn are free, or bulk-billed with a Medicare card.
In response to a referral to our centre, a staff member from our intake team will give you a call to have a chat about what is going on for you. We may book you in for a first appointment. After the first appointment, we’ll chat to you about what supports we can offer.
International students/no Medicare card
If you're an international student or do not have a Medicare card, you may still be able to access our service as some of the supports we offer are free. If a GP or Psychologist service is required, we can have a chat to you about the costs and also help you to contact your private health insurer to find out what will be covered.
How do I get to headspace Hawthorn?
We are located above the Hawthorn Arts Centre at Level 1, 360 Burwood Road, Hawthorn just near the corner of Glenferrie and Burwood Roads. Glenferrie train station is 200 meters away on Glenferrie Road. Tram stop 73 for the number 16 tram is only 50 meters away on Burwood Road. There is 2 hour parking available behind headspace on Kent Street. You can find more information located in our Access Key.
Is there disability access at headspace Hawthorn?
We know that not all places and spaces are easy to access. We have created an Access Key for headspace Hawthorn which describes the features of our centre. You can read our Access Key here.
Our Centre is inside the Hawthorn Arts Centre on level one. There are automatic doors at the building entrance, and an elevator which can be used to get to level one. We also have gender neutral bathrooms.

We know that life can be unpredictable, and you may need to reschedule an appointment. If you cannot make your appointment, it is important that you let us know as soon as possible.
For all appointments at headspace Hawthorn, we require a minimum of 48 hours' notice for counselling appointments.
We do not charge fees for missed appointments and would like to keep it that way. Please help us do this by letting us know when you can't attend!

Are there any employment opportunities with headspace Hawthorn?

Is there a volunteer program at headspace Hawthorn?
headspace Hawthorn & headspace Malvern provides young people aged 16-24 with the opportunity to take action in improving the mental health and wellbeing of young people in the community through our Youth Advisory Group (YAG).
The YAG develops and delivers community events and projects and provides feedback to the centre on how we can improve youth mental health services.
YAG members have the opportunity to expand their skills and knowledge in advocacy, public speaking, project management and mental health.
How do I get involved?

Can I do a placement with headspace Hawthorn?
We offer a small number of placements which are organised directly with our partner university. Unfortunately we cannot accommodate placement requests from other students.
Can I do work experience or an internship with headspace Hawthorn?
Unfortunately we do not currently offer internships or work experience opportunities. However, if you have recently qualified as an Occupational Therapists, Psychologist, or Social Worker in the last three years, the headspace National graduate program may interest you.
