headspace Pilbara - reaching young people through innovative approach

An innovative model of mental health and wellbeing services by headspace officially launched on Friday 18 May in the Pilbara, Western Australia.

A two-year trial of the unique model will offer support in communities across the region, unlike typical headspace centres where young people attend a set location.

There will be mental health workers based in Newman, Port Hedland and Karratha, but the service has been designed to be flexible to reach those seeking help and support.

headspace CEO Jason Trethowan is looking forward to headspace Pilbara providing targeted youth mental health support services.

“Being able to provide essential support for mental health, physical health, alcohol and other drugs, and work and study support to young people, their families and friends in the Pilbara region will have a significant impact,” Mr Trethowan said.

headspace staff will spend time in schools, youth services, Aboriginal Medical Services, community centres, as well as other locations that will allow them to reach young people not typically engaged with school or youth services.

WA Primary Health Alliance (WAPHA), via its Country WA Primary Health Network, commissioned Anglicare WA to design, plan and deliver the $2.2 million service that will cater for young people aged 12 to 25 experiencing mild to moderate mental health issues.

WAPHA’s regional manager Winny Henry said it had been important to understand what impacts upon young people’s mental health and wellbeing, and to identify opportunities for innovation to best meet their needs.

“Anglicare has done an outstanding job in delivering a service model that has the young person front and centre, with the potential to change the lives of many of our young people,” Ms Henry said.

headspace Pilbara will provide support for young people in relation to their general health, sexual health, mental health, education/vocation, and alcohol and substance use.
