Kyle Jdali and Lewis Taranto, two 17-year-old Geelong locals, have gone above and beyond to increase awareness of mental health amongst their peers and raise money for headspace Geelong.

Twenty-twenty has been a challenging year for everyone, but it has particularly affected young people, which is why Lewis and Kyle are passionate about starting, and normalising, conversations about mental health in their peers.

As part of this mission Lewis and Kyle hosted a 24 hour live-stream fundraiser, which included dying their hair pink, shaving their eyebrows and running 2km for every $1000 raised for headspace Geelong- what better way to get people talking! Staying up for 24 hours straight is a testing feat for anyone and wasn’t without its challenges “the livestream was mentally straining on both of us at different points.. having two of us allowed us to take a step back one at a time and recollect our thoughts and emotions”.

Kyle and Lewis were inspired to take a Live-Streaming approach by their friend Jonty Lee who ran a similar fundraiser for headspace National earlier this year.

Kyle and Lewis set out with a goal to raise $5000 and reached an amazing $4,300 on the day.  If you can help Kyle and Lewis reach their $5000 goal visit https://www.mycause.com.au/page/235564/atmans-headspace-fundraiser

Mental Health has been a long term passion for Kyle and Lewis who started Atman, a mental health brand, in July to reduce stigma around mental health and increasing awareness and conversations. The other key goal of Atman is to equip young people with the knowledge and skills to look out for their own headspace. We asked Lewis and Kyle to share what works for them in taking care of their mental health and they kindly shared with us their go to strategies:

Lewis: I question why I am doing things, and if my actions will get me to where I want to be-I force myself to take care of myself by questioning the intention behind my actions-I try and be grateful for everything around me-I play video games and do exercise to relax

Kyle: I eat chocolate-I meditate as I find it helps me to disconnect from the world-I skate as a hobby to de-stress-I appreciate sad moments, as they are necessary for the existence of happy ones

Kyle and Lewis are planning to continue to raise awareness and start conversations about mental health with their Atman brand and have a particular goal of making it a space for young men to talk about mental health openly and safely.
