Heya folks,
It's reconciliation week this week, its a great time to reflect about your connection to your community, land, family, and yourself. We all have a responsibility to make this an equal society and improve the well being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people. Following First Nations instagram pages and supporting businesses is one way for you to give back. Educating yourself and those around you is the most important thing you can do. Keen to hear what you've been up to 🥰
headspace has developed a hub for all information, resources, and tips for what you can do during these difficult times.
Chats occur 6:15pm-9:15pm AEST:
- Monday: navigating relationships
- Tuesday: Qheadspace
- Wednesday: general coping

Omg Alex that happened to me when I was learning Chinese! I got behind, didnt understand anything and it just got really frustrating. @Jams sammeee I never post anything on social media becuase Im out to some fam but not to others lol. But even if you share some stuff with us! :) Or look out for opporunities to share with other organisations (even making something for your headspace centre to post on socials, since you are on a YAG i think?)

You're right Rain! headspace social media is where I was meant to contribute and my boss said they'd let me know when they were accepting submissions but they never got back to me sadly. Kinda my own fault for not being very active though but I have been taking care of my health, this is the one thing I was hoping to do.

thanks for some insight guys, im especially glad im not the only one who was mad at having to go to see the counsellor. i might just take it slow to get to know her, she was probably just trying to get into things really quick because i was taken there because of suicidal thoughts

Definitely agree with Rain! I had a psychologist in the past who went too fast and I was too scared to tell him how I felt...so I wrote my thoughts down on a note instead and passed it to him at the start of my next session. I find writing down my thoughts so much easier than verbalising them!

Leo I chose to go to my school welfare people and after the second time she decided she had to call home about suicidal thoughts. This was the second time i'd gone to talk to her and she already knew about the thoughts but didnt call home that first time. I got a little angry at her for that and didn't/don't like talking to her but its slowly gotten better. We talk about a lot of other stuff like common interests. Same with my headspace worker too we were talking about Harry Potter yesterday in my session haha

I think lots of people find they hate talking to counsellors at the start because it can be really hard to verbalise our thoughts and experinces, but the more we confront this fear and summon the courage, the easier it gets to talk to them

@alex, one day your mum is going to ask you to parent your sister and then you're going to have this on her hahhahah. that sucks to hear. I'm a decade older than my little brother and ironically, my mum had me be pseudo parent from the get go

@jams I think there's a generational gap between my brother and my parents, plus there's a language gap too since my brother hasn't bothered to really learn our native tongue so both parties kinda end up having to depend on me. definitely stressful, can very much relate to how tired it can get

My 10 yo sister has been learning about the "history" of Australia with the help of my dad who is helping her school at home. It frustrates me so much because my dad literally believes that white people discovered this country and saved indigenous Australians from their primitive ways by introducing them to civilisation. Want to speak up so badly but I gotta bite my tongue bc my dad would shut me down in an instant.

that's such a difficult position to be in! I kinda try to feed my sibs some short educational videos to let them figure it out themselves. Always trying to encourage that they digest information from wide sources and make up their own minds (and i kinda um, nudge it a lil bit by linking high quality sources) maybe that would work in this case? without dad being there ofc

I can definitely relate to this as unfortunately boys are favoured girls in my culture, especially among my grandparents' generation. I had to gradually learn to accept that they may never change and that I needed to stop seeking their validation. I understand it's hard tho, it took me until only a few years ago before I was able to stop seeking their validation and instead be proud of my own progress and work!

You shouldnt feel guilty at all. We all cope with things in different ways, and if it has previously impacted you before then it is understandable that you might be confused about how you are feeling. I havent had an experience like that but I have had ones similar where I feel guilty for not caring, but have kinda learnt theres usually a reason why. If that makes any sense haha

Dolphinlegs

ah Kat, it's okay to feel the way you are. I think it's a relief that he's getting admitted, it'll be tough but definitely helpful for him. That being said, it's not your responsibility to have to care about this whole situation; he's getting the support he needs, there's no need to feel guilty
Confused_Llama
Moderator
2nd Jun, 8:27 pm
ooh yeah that sounds potentially life changing for him! but probably a good thing. You could maybe reach out and ask how he is going? send a little message or visit. Because it would probably be tough for him going through it. But also, I dont know the whole situation, with like how close you guys are or not
Confused_Llama

I can definitely understand where you're coming from. My family dynamics are little unconventional and I do struggle alot with the guilt of not feeling as much as I should as I don't really have a relationship with them. I actually talk about this with my psych quite often and she makes me list out the reasons why I don't have a close relationship with them. This helps remind myself that it is completely normal not to have relationship with some or all of your family!

so last week at the end of the chat i started talk about labels and just wanted to get it off my chest and all that heres what i said
"Ive never had a crush on anyone... but then again women what beautiful humans (which is why im kinda playing with the idea of being gay) but then again i feel like this isnt the right lable cause ive never looked at anyone specifically like its just kind of in general women"
like i want i label but none of them feel "right" i think for now i kinda need to accept that maybe i dont need one

For sure! A almost "channel"/"categorise" you in one direction, rather than just doing/feeling however you want
Rain

but i mean its totally okay to want to look for a label ya know? labels and names can also be super empowering in being able to understand urself in a way but they can also be restricting
Rain

2nd Jun, 9:20 pm
like it makes it harder to explore sometimes when u chuck a label on yourself? or atleast thats what i found
Rain

2nd Jun, 9:21 pm
especially for me gender wise trying to find a specific label ended up being way too restrictive to how i actually felt abt my own gender

i thinki n the back of my mind lesbian/gay is right but some part of my brain was like "well no youve never actually liked anyone in particular so that cant be right" but definatly im becoming more comfortable with "just not straight" cause thats easiest
Rain

i think if u wanna use a label like 'lesbian' and jst be open to that changing that can work too – i think thats how i went abt things in the end
Rain

2nd Jun, 9:22 pm
like i kinda jst used bi originally bcos i was like well if i want to tell someone thats the easiest way but i didnt really fully identify with that label

Yasss! omg I remebember!! I was thinking how that also links in with steryeotypes and how I struggled so much trying to be the super stereotypical gay femboy like I thought I was supposed to, but then I was like wait, no, I can still be who I am and not like hide that im a super geek and play games etc. Like labels can be misleading and finding out who you are can be so much better without a label.
But saying that labels can also be really helpful, feeling like you belong to a group and are not alone. But not neccessary tbh

yessss kat! and that gives you more wriggle room to really explore with your identity. there's so much to see and feel and experience!

Labels can be restricting and make you feel like you need to fit a certain mold or be a certain way. But i definitely understand the desire to have one that fits because it was a relief for me the first time I found a label that matched what I was feeling. Don't feel tied down to one label, you can use multiple, or combine them, or even make your own. Saw someone post on insta that they were a squiggly masc person and honestly, I feel that.

Yea I think for me I try not to stress too much about finding the "right" label since I am still not sure if I am ace or not. On the other hand though, I find being able to identify as Bi as a big step towards accepting this part of myself?

its said all the time but gender and sexuality are spectrums and labels can feel restricting sometimes

i think at first, like when i first was questioning, labels meant so so so much to me and i think that was an important part of me then learning that they arent as important to me or really in general as i thought

Some people feel comfy in boxes and others don't. Do whatever you feel is right and remember that if someone asks "what are you?" you don't owe anyone an explanation of what you feel.
