Community Engagement Officer – headspace Albany

 

Youth Focus is a for-purpose organisation that creates brighter futures for young people in Western Australia by offering a range of no-cost mental health services. Established in 1994, Youth Focus delivers innovative and accessible mental health services and programs across Western Australia to help at-risk young people aged 12 to 25. A key component of this, is our role as the lead agency for a number of headspace centres, including headspace Albany, where this role is located.

  
The headspace mission is to collaborate to design and deliver innovative ways of working with young people to strengthen their mental health and wellbeing.

headspace provides a holistic approach to supporting all young people who enter their centres by providing support through four core areas: mental health, physical (including sexual) health, alcohol and other drug services, and work and study support.

headspace Albany is part of a national network of over 100 headspace centres operating across Australia with the vision of all young Australians being supported to be mentally health and engaged in their communities.

 

headspace Albany is currently seeking a creative and dynamic Community Engagement Officer to join their highly successful team.

  • Part-time position (0.70FTE)
  • Fixed-term contract until 30 June 2023, with a likely extension in line with funding

 

About the Role

The Community Engagement Officer is a pivotal role within the multi-disciplinary team of headspace Albany and works closely with the headspace Albany Centre Manager to:

  • Design, implement and evaluate community engagement initiatives which increase awareness in the community about headspace Albany services, mental health literacy, and effective help seeking
  • Partner with local agencies, community groups, and sector networks to obtain better outcomes for young people experiencing mental health challenges
  • Work with key stakeholders to increase access to appropriate services for young people in Indigenous, CaLD, LGBTIQ and homeless communities
  • Develop and deliver psychoeducation and training options for young people and workers that  supports individual and community capacity building through providing information, education for health, and enhancing skills
  • Facilitate the Youth Reference Group and event coordination activities to promote young people’s participation in headspace Albany
  • Collaborate with appropriate community requests and represent headspace Albany and Youth Focus at external events

About You

To be considered for this position, applicants will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline, such as Health Promotion, Allied Health, Education or Youth Work (minimum Diploma level)
  • High level community engagement skills including planning, developing information campaigns/briefings, consultation, partnership development and evaluation
  • Experience working collaboratively across disciplines, sectors and partners in a manner that enhances impact and sustainability
  • Understanding of contemporary youth participation models and experience in the implementation of youth and family engagement strategies
  • Knowledge and understanding of the health and welfare issues affecting young people and families
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and an ability to work with a broad range of people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences
  • Developed organisational, administrative and project management skills
  • Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-motivation and direction with high level of autonomy
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Computer literacy particularly in the effective use of Microsoft office and related programs, Social Media platforms and experience with Adobe Creative Software suite is an advantage
  • Understanding and experience of clinical/counselling services is preferred
