Everybody gambles, right?

Lots of guys in Geelong gamble, but sometimes gambling can go bad.
Gambling can be behind lots of issues that young men bring to you as a worker or practitioner. Depression, anxiety, drugs and alcohol use, social and financial problems can all stem from a gambling problem. Guys with these issues are also more vulnerable to problem gambling, especially those aged 15-25.
Make it easy for young men to talk to you about gambling.
It’s as easy as ASK, EXPLORE, REFER.
ASK: Screening for problem gambling is the best way to encourage a young person to talk to you about their gambling. See our prompt sheet for some suggestions about how to start a conversation.
EXPLORE: You already have the relationship with the young person, so why not build on that? Explore the impact it is having on their lives, and use the prompt sheet for pointers on what to ask about.
REFER: You don’t have to work with this yourself. Whether it be direct referral, shared care or secondary consult, the local Gamblers Help at Bethany is a specialist service for gambling issues. Call us on 5278 8122.
G21 and Gamblers Help are working in partnership with headspace Barwon to streamline service coordination and make sure there is an opportunity for a young person to talk about this issue, and get the help they need.
