Australia’s Youth Mental Health Foundation headspace and the AFL Players Association (AFLPA) have joined forces to say no to homophobia. headspace today launched an online video campaign to highlight the fact that positive messages about inclusion and diversity, delivered by high profile members of the community, can have a positive impact on mental health.

HEADSPACE CONCERN OVER EXCLUSION OF KEY WORKERS FROM MENTAL HEALTH CARE
Changes to the mental health Medicare rebates that will exclude social workers and occupational therapists will deal a blow to national youth mental health foundation headspace. Social Workers and Occupational Therapists provide an important role within the headspace model which at its core has a multidisciplinary team delivering quality, individualised, mental health care for young Australians.

TIME TO STAND UP TO HOMOPHOBIA
On the eve of the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO), headspace poses these questions to all parents, carers and the wider community:
Is it acceptable that same sex attracted young people are up to three times more likely than their heterosexual friends to attempt suicide?
Is it acceptable that in rural and regional areas the attempted suicide rate for same sex attracted young people is six times the population average?
Is it acceptable that 60 per cent of same-sex attracted young people experience violence or abuse? 

FUNDING FOR HEADSPACE WELCOMED

The announcement in tonight’s Federal Budget of additional funding for headspace underlines the Federal Government’s commitment to tackling youth mental illness. headspace welcomes the additional $78.8 million that will deliver up to 30 new youth-friendly mental health services and provide extra funding for the existing 30 headspace sites. This will help a further 20,000 young people with mental health problems each year.

 

FIRST MALE HEALTH POLICY IMPORTANT FOR YOUNG MEN
Today’s launch of Australia’s first ever National Male Health Policy is welcomed by headspace for its intention. headspace CEO Chris Tanti: “We are delighted with the Federal Government’s focus on men’s health pecifically the focus on young men. This is an area that has had limited recognition and investment and we are confident government investment signals the beginning of a longer term focus and investment strategy.”

MINISTER ROXON VISITS HEADSPACE MT DRUITT
The Minister for Health and Ageing, the Hon. Nicola Roxon today visited youth mental health Centre headspace Mt Druitt. Minister Roxon spoke with headspace staff about the many issues that impact on young people’s mental health, including the importance of knowing how and where to get appropriate help.

 

HEADSPACE WELCOMES FUNDING TO SUPPORT SAME SEX ATTRACTED YOUNG PEOPLE

National Youth Mental Health Foundation, headspace, has welcomed the Victorian Government’s budget announcement of a $3.6 million youth suicide community support program aimed at reducing suicides amongst same sex attracted young people.

VICTORIAN STATE BUDGET NEEDED TO DO MORE ON MENTAL HEALTH
headspace believes today’s Victorian State Budget has failed to adequately address one of the most serious health issues facing people in our community – mental health. The CEO of headspace, Mr Chris Tanti, said the budget contains no meaningful community investment in early intervention services for mental health.

Founded by Girlfriend magazine and supported by SUPRÉ, National Compliments Day (Friday 16 April 2010) aims to combat issues such as bullying and body image by promoting the importance of giving and receiving positive feedback. Funds raised as part of National Compliments Day will go to headspace, Australia’s youth mental health foundation.

Australia’s national youth mental health foundation, headspace, is a Principal Partner of National Youth Week 2010, which encourages all young people aged 12 -25 years to take part in activities and enjoy special events that celebrate their individuality and diversity. 

HEADSPACE PROVIDES ‘TOP TIPS’ FOR YOUNG PEOPLE ON SAFER INTERNET DAY
headspace, National Youth Mental Health Foundation, is using Safer Internet Day to encourage young people to think about how their online activity can affect other people. Safer Internet Day is an annual event that aims to raise awareness about the safe and responsible use of online technologies by children and young people. The theme for this year is: think before you post. headspace is reminding young people to consider the impact their online activity has on others.

BUSHFIRE SPACE AT HEADSPACE: NEW ONLINE SUPPORT FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
headspace, National Youth Mental Health Foundation is pleased to announce the launch of a new online space for young people affected by the Victorian bushfires in early 2009. Developed in collaboration with the Victorian Department of Health and made possible by the generous support of the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund, the website provides a much needed place for young people continuing to struggle with the aftermath of the bushfires.
